ANP will back resolution seeking Musharraf’s trial
ISLAMABAD: The Awami National Party (ANP) will support a resolution seeking the trial of former president Pervez Musharraf, ANP Vice President Haji Adeel said on Wednesday. Talking to a private TV channel, he said, “It is our stance that the resolution against Musharraf must be tabled, and we will support it. It is up to the main political parties to table it in parliament and we will see its text.” He said his party was of the view that action should be taken under Article 6 of the constitution against the dictators who had usurped power in the past. “The ANP will never support a person who has violated the law and abrogated the constitution and will support any action against such a person,” Adeel added. app
Ensuring parliament’s supremacy is in national interest
ISLAMABAD: Ensuring the supremacy of parliament is in the national interest, Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim said on Wednesday. The Pakistan People’s Party workers and leaders had always rendered sacrifices in fight against dictatorial regimes and in removing Musharaf’s uniform he said, adding all credit goes to PPP and Benazir Bhutto. The minister said the PPP workers and leaders had always rendered sacrifices in their struggle against dictatorial regimes. All credit for forcing Musharraf to remove the military fatigues goes to the PPP and its leader Benazir Bhutto, he added.“I am a party worker and would remain associated with the party forever,” he remarked. He said he did not give importance to what Nawaz Sharif thought about him. “I have to take care of my own party workers and the public at large.” He said he considered Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani his brother and “a comrade during difficult times”. app
Harnessing potential of youth will lead Pakistan to progress
ISLAMABAD: Harnessing the potential of the country’s youth will lead Pakistan to progress and prosperity, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi said on Wednesday. The youth can play a vital role in sustainable development of the country, he said while addressing a seminar organised by the Minhajul Quran Youth League in connection with International Youth Day. He said Pakistan was facing numerous challenges, including extremism and terrorism, adding the youth must be shielded from the negative fall-out of those challenges and engaged in constructive pursuits. He urged the youth to follow the guiding principles of Islam and cultivate tolerance among themselves. He said the active participation of educated young population plays a vital role in the development of the nation. He said the situation demanded intense efforts from the public and private sector to transform the youth into an educated and trained human resource. The deputy speaker said the government was aware of the problems being faced by the youth and was making all-out efforts to address them. online
Media exposed real face of terrorists
PESHAWAR: The media has assisted the government in the war on terror by exposing the real face of terrorists to the world and apprising the international community of the problems Pakistan faced on account of terrorism, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haidar Khan Hoti said on Wednesday. He said the provincial government believed in the freedom of press and wanted journalists to perform their duties without any curbs to minimise the difficulties of the public and guide the government. He was addressing a delegation of senior journalists at that CM’s Secretariat. The chief minister said although terrorists had been flushed out from the conflict-hit area to a large extent, the difficulties of settling a large population of internally displaced persons and reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure remained, which required the assistance of the international community and donor agencies. The chief minister said, “We have faced terrorism with great courage and will also continue our struggle for the attainment of rights of the province so that the developmental process begins here as it has in other provinces.” online
No one can dictate to media now
ISLAMABAD: Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis’ Minister Khurshid Shah’s wish to form a parliamentary committee and summoning of a TV anchor by that committee reflects his immaturity, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid said on Wednesday. Talking to a private TV channel, the former minister said no one could dictate to the media now. Rashid said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) claimed to be the “champions of independence of media” but the media had exposed the rulers. He said the government had in fact acknowledged its mistakes and shifted the burden on the media, which reflected its panic. online
